Awww, meeting Baby Colton for the first time was so precious. He was so tiny and so perfect. His soft, even skin tone made me ponder why our skin must change as we age... Oh, to have that perfect baby skin. There is nothing like holding a brand new baby, their sweet scent and I just love how Colton snuggled up with his legs tucked tightly to his chest and his hands close to his face, the comfort that a wee baby brings, I felt the stresses of my world melt away as I snuggled with this little guy. I was quickly reminded that it was not that long ago that my daughters were once this small. Brittany and Jason, you both made one beautiful baby.
This particular shoot was planned as a 'Lifestyle Shoot'. Just exactly what is Lifestyle Photography? My view of imagery is that it should reflect reality. It should capture your life just as it is. The ups, the downs, the values, the attitudes, the emotions, the personalities, and the life. The greatness and the quality of your life. We often see families posed and smiling, but it doesn't reflect what I think can be captured in 'Lifestyle Imagery'. I want to see and capture life as it is happening... thus 'Lifestyle Photography'. Looking back on my own childhood, there were so many pictures that were perfect shots depicting life as it was unfolding. This is what I LOVE!
Brittany and I walked through her home to find the best light that I could use to capture this little bundle. I was so excited when I walked into a spare bedroom and there in that room was the most radiant light coming into the room. Oh, how I get excited when I score an ideal lighting situation. Propped up against the wall was a mattress and box springs awaiting to be set up (Brittany and Jason had just moved into their home a few days earlier). I asked Jason if he would be willing to help me set the bed up on the floor, with the right angle as to capture the natural light coming across the room. He quickly moved into action. I laid out a beautiful knitted blanket across the mattress and made a make shift bed with pillows leaned against the head of the bed and the wall. It was time to get to work while I had this most perfect lighting. I set my camera adjustments in Manual Mode, Brittany laid little Colton down and I began capturing the new life of baby Colton. He was so amazingly good the entire time. There is something special about photographing a brand new baby... everytime, I get ch
Meet Chelsea! What a blast we had doing this shoot. Chelsea is just at the finish line ready to graduated with a PA Degree (Physician's Assistant) and her Mom, Kathy treated her to a Professional Headshot Shoot for her resume and Facebook Profile. Chelsea and I had such a great time walking, talking and shooting... What a beautiful Woman you are! Chelsea tells me that she loves to snowboard and ANYTHING to do with water! I'm digging the arm muscles you are sporting Chelsea.

When I was a new photographer, actually getting paid from my very first clients, I wanted to do the best job I could. I was on cloud nine, feeling confident, feeling like I could really make a go at this new successful adventure I was on. I was over weight by 60+ pounds, always tired and moving around was a challenge. My confidence quickly diminished and I was brought back to reality that I needed to make some changes.
One day while at a shoot I was walking up an inclined driveway to get a better angle on a family that I was shooting and I crouched down to get a great shot and when I stood up I lost my balance and fell completely backwards. Falling was due to my lack of core balance and I knew it! I had a good laugh as the family looked at me with concern, even asking me if I was OK. when they saw I was laughing you could see the relief come across their faces. Needless to say inside I was humiliated. The image below has spoken to me on more occasions than I can even count. There were so many months even years that I promised myself tomorrow...
I am happy to say that I have truly embraced a life of living healthy. While I am not quite at my goal weight, I am well on my way feeling better than I have in years and feeling confident when I venture out to a shoot. I no longer think about myself, how I look, or will I be able to keep my balance, I think about what I need to accomplish for each client and giving the very best of myself that I can. It all started with taking care of me and getting myself to a healthy place.
Being healthy speaks volumes about every aspect of your being. Today, I honor who I am, what I am and what I am doing to bring happiness to others lives through my images. What changes can you make today to be more healthy and to get yourself to a place where you can truly give to others?

Knowing what to wear can be a big challenge. A couple of weeks ago we talked about choosing clothing to match your living room and since this seems to be the biggest worry a Mom has when preparing her family for their special shoot, I thought it was a great chance to talk a little bit more about styling. In fact, there is so much to this, that I will be blogging about this subject on future posts.
When I meet with clients for their in-home consultations, this is one thing we must cover, "What to Wear". It really is that important and you want your clothing to be well suited for your style and coordinate with each member of the family, but not be too matchy, matchy. Here are four examples to keep in mind when choosing your clothing options for a photo shoot.

Tuesday Tips | Pick Clothing to Match Your Living Room
This is the number one question I get from every client... "What do we wear?" My answer is always "Pick your clothing to match your living room." I always get the strangest looks until I can explain why I make such a suggestion. Chances are you have a style. Do you prefer modern lines, timeless traditions or comfy classics? Vibrant colors, deep hues or bright whites? Simple, busy or trendy decor? These preferences most likely have a lot to do with your style and can point you in the right direction to choose clothes for your photo ops. When printed, your photo art will feel right at home on your living room wall!
Great photography doesn’t take fancy equipment or college degrees—just passion and a willingness to invest in yourself and in the memories you’ll be preserving for generations to come.
